Insurance

Summary

The College currently provides insurance coverage through its self-insurance program with the Michigan Community College Risk Management Authority (MCCRMA).

General liability

Coverage is provided for $15,000,000, which includes bodily injury, property damage, law enforcement, public officials’ errors & omissions, operations of motor vehicles, and wrongful acts. Also included in the coverage is professional liability for nurses, paramedics, emergency medical service technicians, or other similar roles to provide immediate medical assistance or treatment in an emergency, or as incurred as a result of student training as part of allied health or similar programs.

Motor vehicle physical damage

The MCCRMA will pay for damage to or loss of the College's motor vehicles or those for which the member is legally responsible (e.g., rental vehicle for College business), except fire and emergency vehicles, provided the damage or loss exceeds $500 per vehicle. All losses up to the $500 deductible must be borne by the individual department incurring the loss. Motor vehicle liability, including personal and property protection and residual liability under No-Fault Insurance, is as follows:

  • A Delta College employee injured as a driver/passenger in a College motor vehicle or in his/her own personal motor vehicle while performing College business can seek coverage through Worker's Compensation for medical expenses and loss of work time.
  • A non-Delta College employee injured as a driver/passenger in a College motor vehicle can seek coverage for medical and/or personal damages as follows:
    • Personal no-fault auto insurance
    • Personal no-fault auto insurance of a family member within the same household
    • Further progression as required by the No-Fault Statute.  MCCRMA coverage may apply, but it is secondary to any other recoverable insurance.

Property and crime

All settlements carry a $1,000 deductible, which is not budgeted; the costs of which must be borne by the individual department incurring the loss. Property and crime settlements may include building contents, property while in transit or at other premises, electronic data processing equipment, fine arts, valuable papers, and money and securities. Personal property not owned by the College or owned by any employee but in the College's care, custody, or control may also be covered. Personal property of others is valued on the same basis as the College's personal property, but MCCRMA will not pay more than the amount for which the College is legally liable. Personal property of employees is valued on the same basis as the employee's personal property, but MCCRMA will not pay more than the amount for which the employee is legally liable. Personal property not in the care, custody, or control of the College is not covered.
